Marzell’s books added to collections of prestigious university libraries

Books written by retired educator and author Terry Lee Marzell added to  libraries of prestigious libraries.

I always get excited when I learn that one of my books has been added to the collection of a prestigious university library. A search of WorldCat reveals that both of my books have been added to the collections of prestigious university libraries.

My first book, Chalkboard Champions (2012), part of the collection of the libraries at the University of Arizona, Tucson; University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii; the City University of New York in New York, New York; and Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. The volume is also part of the collection of the libraries of Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota; the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and the State University of New York in Oswego, New York. The book is also available at Hunter College in New York, New York; Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey; Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts; and the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. In addition, it is also part of the collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Chalkboard Heroes (2015) has been added to the collections of the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles, California; Chadron State University in Chadron, Nebraska; the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and the University of Chicago Library in Chicago, Illinois. The volume can also be found in the Alaska State Library in Juneau, Alaska; Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana; and Central Connecticut State Library in New Britain, Connecticut.

Many thanks to all these university libraries for honoring my work!

Read inspirational stories about teachers over summer vacation! Terry Lee Marzell recommends…

Congratulations! You have nearly made it to the end of another school year! Dedicated educators all over the country are busy wrapping up their current instructional programs, grading projects and working on finals, calculating semester grades, and cleaning up their classrooms. Many are preparing for commencement ceremonies, from pre-school to college. So much to do before the onset of summer vacation!

You might be considering buying end-of-year gifts for that favorite co-worker at your school, especially the one that is retiring, the teacher in your family, your child’s special teacher, or maybe that history buff you know. Or you might be thinking about indulging yourself, and stocking up on something inspirational to read during your much-needed time off. The kids aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a summer reading list, right?

Reading the stories of inspirational teachers in American history is a terrific way to reflect upon your successes from the past year. And they can really add that extra oomph that helps you recharge your batteries for the year to come. I have two splendid titles to suggest:  Chalkboard Champions: Twelve Remarkable Teachers who Educated America’s Disenfranchised Students (available here) and Chalkboard Heroes: Twelve Courageous Teachers and Their Deeds of Valor (available here), both by Terry Lee Marzell. Each one available in print or in e-book formats and is reasonably priced. You can also browse the titles on the Books to Read list found elsewhere on this website.

However you decide to spend your precious time off, enjoy!

Author Terry Lee Marzell addresses Delta Kappa Gamma members

Author Terry Lee Marzell speaks about her work to recognize and celebrate great teachers at a recent meeting of the Beta Phi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Author Terry Lee Marzell was invited to address the members as a guest speaker at the Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International on Monday, May 20, 2019. Terry discussed her two published books, Chalkboard Champions and Chalkboard Heroes, and her other work to recognize and celebrate great teachers. She also shared her favorite stories about a few of the teachers featured in her books.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (DKG) was founded in 1929 by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and a group of eleven of her colleagues at the University of Texas, Austin. Since 1929, the DKG organization has spread to over all 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and 17 international countries. On March 2, Terry was named one of 37 charter members of the newly-formed Kappa Beta Chapter which serves Corona, Norco, Chino, and Chino Hills. The Beta Phi  chapter serves California’s southern Orange County, which includes Irvine, Rancho Santa Margarita, Tustin, and Huntington Beach. The meeting was held in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Terry Lee Marzell receives Certificate of Recognition from California State Legislature

Author Terry Lee Marzell received a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Legislature on May 9, 2019. The certificate, which was presented to her by Assemblyman Phillip Chen (District 55), was to honor Terry for her leadership and service. “We appreciate the vital role you play in the 55th Assembly District,” reads the certificate. “Thank you for your dedicated commitment and great contributions to our community.”

Terry earned the honor, in part, for her work towards recognizing and celebrating great teachers through her published books, her website, her daily blog, and her public speaking events. Terry is, herself, a retired teacher with a total of 36 years in the classroom. She continues to serve her profession as the Co-President of Division 80 of the California Retired Teachers Association, and she edits their monthly newsletter. She has served on the organization’s Scholarship Committee, assisting with fundraising events, conducting interviews for prospective scholarship winners, and presenting the awards. She has also returned to her former school of employment each year to conduct exit interviews for graduating seniors. In March, 2019, Terry was inducted into the Kappa Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization that promotes the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

In addition, Terry serves as an adult literacy tutor at her community library, and she has done volunteer work at her local no-kill pet shelter. Terry is an active member of an area political club, and she has worked with the County of San Bernardino to assist with the running of her neighborhood’s polling place.

“I was really surprised to receive this honor,” says Terry. “And I am very grateful to have my work on recognizing and celebrating great teachers recognized.”

Gifting Marzell’s books on Teacher Appreciation Day

Teacher Appreciation Day is just around the corner! This year, the celebration will take place from May 6 to May 10. When trying to decide just the right gift to give to your friends and family members that are teachers, or that special teacher that works with your child, consider copies of my books, Chalkboard Champions and Chalkboard Heroes. Each volume is packed with inspirational stories about remarkable educators in American history and the historical implications of their pioneering work. These books make great gifts for individuals in the teaching profession and those aspiring to become teachers some day. They are also appealing to history buffs and social scientists.

Among the captivating stories in Chalkboard Champions is the story of Charlotte Forten Grimke, an African American born into freedom who volunteered to teach emancipated slaves as the Civil War raged around her. Read the eyewitness account of the Wounded Knee massacre through the eyes of teacher Elaine Goodale Eastman, and educator Mary Tsukamoto, imprisoned in a WWII Japanese internment camp. Read about Mississippi Freedom Summer teacher Sandra Adickes who, together with her students, defied Jim Crow laws to integrate the Hattiesburg Public Library. Marvel at the pioneering work of Anne Sullivan Macy, the teacher of Helen Keller, the efforts of teacher Clara Comstock to find homes for thousands of Orphan Train riders, and the dedication of Jaime Escalante, the East LA educator who proved to that inner city Latino youths could successfully meet the demands of a rigorous curriculum.

In Chalkboard Heroes, read about dedicated educators who were heroes both inside and outside of the classroom, including WWI veteran Henry Alvin Cameron and Civil War veteran Francis Wayland Parker. Learn about teachers who were social reformers such as Dolores Huerta, Civil Rights activist Robert Parris Moses, suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, and Native American rights advocate Zitkala-Sa, all of whom put themselves at risk to fight for improved conditions for disenfranchised citizens. Discover brave pioneers who took great risks to blaze a trail for others to follow such as Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space; Willa Brown Chappell, the aviatrix who taught Tuskegee airmen to fly; Etta Schureman Jones, the Alaskan teacher who was interned in a POW camp in Japan during WWII; and Olive Mann Isbell, who established the first English school in California while the Mexican american War raged around her.

All these remarkable stories and more can be shared with someone you know this year on Teacher Appreciation Day!
