TX educator Nancy Chavira garners 2024-2025 Milken Educator Award

Hearty congratulations go to Nancy Chavira, a middle school teacher from Fabens, Texas. She has garnered a prestigious 2024-2025 Milken Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation, one of only 34 educators nationwide to win the award this year.

The Milken Educator Awards have been described by Teacher Magazine as the “Oscars of Teaching.” In addition to the $25,000 cash prize and public recognition, the award includes membership in the National Milken Educator Network, a group of more than 3,000 exemplary teachers, principals, and specialists from all over the country whose work strengthens best practices in education. Nancy teaches mathematics and science to fifth graders at Johanna O’Donnell Intermediate School in Fabens, Texas. The students in her classroom learn in a 50/50 model classroom where curriculum is taught in both Spanish and English.

In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Nancy serves as the school’s yearbook advisor and as a member of the Science Fair Committee member. She organizes the students in her class to participate in the annual O’Donnell Christmas Project, a project that helps to build gift bags of essential to distribute to residents in Ciudad Juárez. And, as if all that were not enough, Nancy also contributes to her community by training families on how to promote reading instruction at home.

“Nancy Chavira sets a high bar when it comes to being a role model for young students and fellow colleagues,” delcares Dr. Foley, a fellow Milken Educator. “Her unwavering dedication has made a positive impact on her classroom, school and the community,” she continued.

Nancy earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration as a EC-6 Bilingual Generalist from the University of Texas, El Paso, in 2015.

 

FL science teacher Lindsey Laurino garners recognition

I always enjoy sharing news that an excellent educator has earned recognition for their work in the classroom. Here is an outstanding educator who teaches in Florida: Lindsey Laurino of the St, Lucie Public Schools District located in Port St. Lucie, Florida. She has garnered the 2024 Ron Nieto Digital Educator Award from the Florida State Department of Education. The Ron Nieto Digital Educator award recognizes extraordinary educators who use digital components to enhance student achievement in the classroom.

In addition to this honor, Lindsey has been named the 2025 District Teacher of the Year for St. Lucie County. With these awards comes an additional title: She has been named an honorary member of the Education Foundation Board of Directors

Lindsey teaches courses in Gifted Science to middle school students in grades six through eight at St. Lucie West K-8 school. She also serves her school as the STEM Fair co-ordinator. (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.) Among her colleagues, Lindsey has a reputation for excelling in using technology in the classroom to positively impact her students’ outcomes.

When asked about her teaching philosophy, Lindsey responded, “Never forget your love for learning, and always show your students the beauty of education.”

Lindsey’s educational journey began at Indian River State College, and continued at Auburn University and Florida Atlantic University.

WI teacher Cindy Stetzer earns prestigious PAEMST

I am always excited to shine a spotlight on an exceptional educator who has earned accolades for their work in public school classrooms. Today, I highlight the story of outstanding science teacher Cindy Stetzer of Galesville, Wisconsin. Recently she was named a recipient of a prestigious PAEMST (Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching) from former President Joe Biden. Science teacher Katie Strait of Maine earns recognition

I am always pleased to share the story of an exceptional teacher who has earned recognition for their work with young people. Today, I share the story of Katie Strait, a high school teacher who was named a 2024 County Teacher of the Year for the county of Cumberland, Maine.

Katie teaches at the Baxter Academy for Technology and Science, a public charter school located in Portland, Maine. The school offers courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for students in grades nine through twelve. Katie teaches courses in biology and marine biology.

Katie was raised in upstate New York. When she graduated from high school, she moved to Maine to attend the University of New England. There she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Marine Science. Then she enrolled at the University of New Hampshire where she earned a Master’s degree in Zoology with a focus in Aquaculture. Most of her professional career has been in the science industry – from R&D in a clinical chemistry lab to becoming a manager at Bangs Island Mussels.

Once she earned her degrees, Katie took a job in a clinical chemistry lab and worked for a while as a manager at Bangs Island Mussels. But it was a long-term substitute position at Sanford Middle School that caused her to realize she wanted to pursue a career in education. She taught at Sanford for five years and then, in 2021, she accepted the position at Baxter Academy.

In her classroom, Katie is well-known for her hands-on, real-world teaching style and her focus on relationship-building. She organizes regular field trips for her students to explore the nearby tide pools and marine ecosystems, and often organizes beach clean-ups, and then she asks her students to create art work with what they find during these clean-ups.

I am always happy to share the story of a teacher who has earned accolades for their work with young people. Today, I share the story of Amber Chalmers, an elementary school teacher from Lancaster, Texas. She has been named named the 2024 Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT).

Amber teaches science to fifth graders at Spring Houston Elementary School in Houston, Texas. She has taught there for the past eight years. She believes science is not just a subject, but a way of thinking and exploring the world around us. She encourages her students to think of science beyond just the end-of-year exams and to find creative ways to approach science. When she’s not in the classroom, Amber serves as a mentor to other elementary science teachers within her district.

“Learning science now is vastly different than when I was a student many years ago,” asserts Amber. “I could never get into it as a kid, so now I make it a mission for my students to find joy in science,” she reveals. “They love doing hands-on experiments, but I take it further and engage the students in discussion following each experiment or lab. The discussions are vital because they allow the students to dive deeper into why something happened and then make connections to real-world situations outside of the classroom,” she continues. She says the students absorb the concept even more than they normally would following the discussion because they all bring different perspectives and experiences to the conversation.

Amber earned her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching from Prairie View A&M in 2005. She earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas, Arlington, in 2009.

With her STAT recognition comes an additional honor. Amber has been named one of six state finalists for a prestigious 2024 PAEMST (Presidential Award fir Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
